Why I Read

"Why do you read so much?" My then boyfriend now hubby asked me one day over a call when I told him I was reading a novel.  Well I love to read was my answer then. But seriously why? Reading takes me to a different world where I get to know about different people, their lifestyle, struggle, emotion, love. I get to know about different culture, place, food, ethnicity. There is a saying in Kannada "Desha nodu kosha odu".  "Travel world read books". I feel it makes me compassionate and sensitive. I do not feel lonely when books are with me. It is like having your best friend sans being judgmental. It does great on one's vocabulary and command over language. I do not mind reading the same books again and again. I have quite an impressive collection of books and am so proud of them. It is one of my dreams to own a cafe shop where people can relax having a cuppa and reading their favourite book.

How this reading habit started? There are three people who nurtured and encouraged this habit of mine. First, my father. He himself has a good collection. He used to buy comics like Chandamama, Bombe mane, Balamitra every month. Though my siblings never took into reading, I latched on to it. I used to devour them immediately. As I grow up, I moved to Ramayana, Mahabharata, Shiva Purana, Vikrama-Betala, Tenali Rama, Akbar-Birbal, Zen, etc. I must brag here I am an expert on Ramayana and Mahabharata. My father was happy with my reading hobby as long as it does not interfere with my studies. Yeah typical father.

Second is my maternal grandmother. She was an avid reader who read Shivaram Karanth, Kuvempu, Triveni, M.K.Indira, and many Kannada writers. I stayed with her during my school days and moved on to reading novels. I read Purnachandra Tejaswi's Chidambara rahasya when was 12 and I must say I did not understand much. Again,
even my ammamma has the same view as my father that studies should not be disturbed by novels. Well I am an evil who kept novels inside the textbook and went on to read many classics.

Then started my journey with Mills and Boon in college days and I loved them, though feel a little sheepish now. A friend of mine gave me her library member card. Since I was staying away from home for college, there was no one to restrict me from reading. I did not have to sneak and read. Oh the joy. I read, I read, and read.

Third is hubby who always encouraged me to read, buy, and read. He knows how much I love reading. In fact, he is the one who motivated me to write. I was little hesitant to do so. He is nothing but a biggest supporter in my life. Yeah. I cannot stop gushing about him. I digress.

My favourite Kannada authors are S.L. Bhyrappa, Shivaram Karantha, Kuvempu, Triveni,

M.K. Inidra, Usha Navaratna Rao, Saisute, Ravi Belagere.

Few of my favourite English authors are J.K.Rowling, Sidney Sheldon, Robin Cook, Jeffrey Archer, Dan Brown, Danielle Steel, Barbara Cartland, Nora Roberts, Khaleed Hosseini, Nicholas Sparks.

I mostly read fictions, not a great fan of non-fiction. I wouldn't pick a non-fiction by myself. I have mind block and it is an effort to finish them. Maybe they are not my type.

"I AM A BIG BIG POTTER FAN". Yeah he is my extended family.

Reading is fun. Reading is therapeutic. Reading is fantastic.

Go ahead, grab a book, and be lost in the journey.
